FP Live: Errol Damelin

The latest FP Live event saw Errol Damelin, renowned entrepreneur, angel and founder of Wonga, join Forward Partners' Nic Brisbourne to discuss his entrepreneurial career to date.

The room at Old Street's 'The Trampery' was bustling with a mixture of established and aspiring fintech founders, London tech scenesters, lots of Forward Partners portfolio companies as well as the FP team. We were all keen to hear from Errol who has carved out a reputation as not only a formidable entrepreneur in his own right but also a incredibly innovative angel investor, supporter of entrepreneurs and of the UK founder community.

Errol's account of building the Wonga brand in the era of 'free money', when a lot of traditional banks were cultivating huge credit card debts from customers, was fascinating and pulled no punches. It was great to hear the Wonga perspective on achieving formidable growth and to the vast media commentary that the brand has inspired.

During the evening Errol gave an interesting take on the Lean approach to starting up, citing that although valid in some instances, it should not be an excuse for mediocre or half-baked execution - wise words!

The video of the evening will be available shortly so stay tuned if you weren't able to join. We'll be announcing our next FP Live very soon!

Nic has spent over 10 years working within national consumer communications agencies on behalf of global retail and e-commerce clients including Amazon.co.uk, Hamleys, ASDA and Pretty Green.

Prior to joining Forward Partners, Nic headed up the PR team at one of the UK's fastest growing e-commerce businesses, notonthehighstreet.com. During his time with the marketplace, Nic was responsible for leading PR strategy for the brand and also worked alongside the SMEs it supports, consulting on communications strategy.

Nic leads communication strategy on behalf of Forward Partners whilst also working with our start ups, helping them to conceptualise and tell their brand and business stories to both press and the target consumer.

What Nic loves about FP: "It's a privilege to get to work with such a talented team and so many inspirational founders. It feels like we're all in it together which is really special, working towards big things."
